Former Treasurer of the Detroit Fire Fighters Union Sentenced to Prison for Stealing Over $200,000 in Union Funds

DETROIT - Verdine Day, the former Treasurer of the Detroit Fire Fighters Union (DFFA), was sentenced to one year in federal prison for embezzling over $200,000 in union funds, announced U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison today.

Joining Ison in the announcement were James A. Tarasca, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Irene Lindow, Special Agent-in-Charge, Chicago Region, U.S. Department of Labor Office of Inspector General.

Yakima Woman Indicted for COVID-19 Relief Fraud as part of U.S. Attorney’s COVID-19 Fraud Strike Force

Yakima, Washington – Vanessa R. Waldref, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District  of Washington, has announced that Karla Padilla, age 48, of Yakima, Washington, was indicted this week on seven counts of fraudulently obtaining COVID-19 relief funding. This Indictment is the most recent set of charges resulting from the COVID-19 Relief Fraud Strike Force launched by the U.S. Attorney’s Office earlier this year.

Camden County Man Sentenced to 46 Months in Prison for Trafficking in Oxycodone Pills

CAMDEN, N.J. – A Camden County, New Jersey, man was sentenced today to 46 months in prison for distributing and conspiring to distribute oxycodone pills, making him the ninth person sentenced for his role in a drug trafficking ring operating in and around Camden and Gloucester City, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced.

Federal Bureau of Prisons Corrections Officer Pleads Guilty to Sexual Assault of Woman in Custody in Los Angeles Jail

          LOS ANGELES – A corrections officer with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) pleaded guilty today in federal court to one felony count of deprivation of rights under color of law for sexually assaulting a woman in custody in December 2020.

          Jose Viera, 49, of Monterey Park, pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Otis D. Wright II.

Former Postal Worker Sentenced For Defrauding Department Of Labor Of $732,000 In Disability Payments

Ocala, Florida – Senior United States District Judge John Antoon II has sentenced George Utley (56, Oklahoma City) to 30 months in federal prison for receiving stolen government property, specifically, Department of Labor (DOL) Disability Benefit Payments. Utley was also ordered to make full restitution to the DOL and to forfeit $732,459.46, representing the value of the stolen funds. Utley had pleaded guilty on February 14, 2022.
