BOSTON – A Worcester psychiatrist was arrested yesterday on charges that he illegally prescribed controlled substances to patients and submitted false reimbursement claims to defraud the Medicare program. Mohamad Och, 65, was indicted on eight counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and two counts of health care fraud. Och was released on conditions following an initial appearance yesterday before U.S. Magistrate Judge David H. Hennessy in federal court in Worcester.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Eric Todd Ellis, 32, a former Bureau of Prisons (BOP) corrections officer at the FCI-Aliceville facility in Aliceville, Alabama, pleaded guilty today in federal court to one count of sexual abuse of a ward and one count of tampering with a witness.

Wyatt Detention Facility correctional officer, two detainees, a defendant released from the Wyatt due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and another person have been charged by way of federal criminal complaints for their alleged participation in a scheme to smuggle Suboxone into the Central Falls facility, announced Acting United States Attorney Richard B. Myrus.

            LOS ANGELES – One of the largest hospital systems in the nation and two of its doctors will pay $37.5 million to resolve violations of the False Claims Act and the California False Claims Act. The settlement – which resolved two cases, one of which the government today learned was unsealed – is a joint resolution with the U.S. Department of Justice and the California Department of Justice.

Leonard C Boyle, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that WALI MUHAMMAD, 46, of Branford, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant in Hartford to 24 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for defrauding Connecticut’s Medicaid Program.

Orlando, FL – Acting United States Attorney Karin Hoppmann announces that Florida Neurological Center, LLC and its owner, Dr. Lance Kim (61, Ocala), have agreed to pay $800,000 to resolve allegations that Dr. Kim prescribed medically unnecessary and unreasonable prescription drugs, specifically, Acthar Gel®, which cost the Medicare program approximately $35,000 each time Dr. Kim prescribed a five-day supply.

Acting United States Attorney Ellison C. Travis announced that U.S. District Judge John W. deGravelles sentenced Adrian C. Hammond, Jr., age 41, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to 24 months in federal prison following the Court’s determination that Hammond violated the terms of his federal supervised release.  The Court also ordered the defendant to pay his outstanding restitution balance of approximately $250,000.
