Tampa, Florida – U.S. District Judge Virginia Hernandez Covington has sentenced Jonathan Marmol (41, Odessa) to 15 months in federal prison and Mordechai Boaziz (67, Miami Beach) to 90 days in federal prison for conspiracy to make false statements to financial institutions.  Marmol and Boaziz had pleaded guilty to the offenses in November 2019.

The United States Attorney for the District of Vermont announced that Marvin Smith, 57, a former resident of Whitingham who now lives in Florida, pleaded not guilty today in United States District Court in Burlington to charges that he stole money from the U.S. Postal Service.  U.S. Magistrate Judge John M. Conroy released Smith on conditions pending trial, which has not been scheduled.

BOSTON – A Dighton registered nurse was charged today in federal court in Boston with drug tampering. Marietta Strickland, 61, was charged by information with one count of tampering with a consumer product, specifically the Schedule II controlled substance oxycodone, which is used for pain relief.

BOSTON – A Haverhill nurse pleaded guilty today in federal court in Boston to tampering with patients’ morphine. Brianna Duffy, 32, pleaded guilty to one count of tampering with a consumer product and one count of acquiring a controlled substance by fraud or deception. U.S. District Court Judge William G. Young scheduled sentencing for Sept. 14, 2020. Duffy was indicted in July 2019.

NEW ORLEANS – The United States Attorney’s Office announced that ARVIND “MIKE” VIRA (“VIRA”), age 74, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was charged today with conspiracy to defraud First NBC Bank, the New Orleans-based bank that failed in April 2017.

Tampa, Florida – U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday has sentenced Robert Miller (54, Brandon) to six months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for theft of government funds. As part of his sentence, the court also entered a money judgment of $75,984, the proceeds from the offense, and ordered Miller to pay restitution. Miller had pleaded guilty on January 28, 2020.

PHILADELPHIA – United States Attorney William M. McSwain announced that Metro Beauty Academy, LLC (“MBA”) has agreed to pay $425,000 to resolve allegations that the school falsely sought federal student aid for students ineligible to receive such aid.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn – On June 10, 2020, Marilyn Yvette Cook (also known as Marilyn Yvette Powell), 57, of Alcoa, was sentenced by the Honorable Pamela L. Reeves, Chief U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Tennessee at Knoxville.  Cook was sentenced to 51 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
