WASHINGTON: A strategically coordinated, six-week nationwide federal law enforcement action has resulted in criminal charges against 138 defendants, including 42 doctors, nurses, and other licensed medical professionals, in 31 federal districts across the United States for their alleged participation in various healthcare fraud schemes for more than $1.4 billion in alleged losses.

BOSTON – A Dudley man pleaded guilty today in connection with his involvement in a scheme to fraudulently obtain and misuse COVID-19-related unemployment assistance. Norman Higgs, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud conspiracy. U.S. District Court Judge Patti B. Saris scheduled sentencing for Dec. 17, 2021. Higgs was charged in May 2021.

RICHMOND, Va. – Former Bureau of Prisons (BOP) correctional officers at Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Petersburg, Stephen Taylor and Shanice Bullock, were sentenced today for their respective roles in a bribery scheme that allowed for the introduction of contraband into the prison by FCI Petersburg inmate Dontay Cox.

ABINGDON, Va. – A Bristol, Tennessee man was sentenced today to three months of home confinement for conspiring with another man to pay and receive kickbacks. In addition to home confinement, he will pay $56,000 in monetary penalties and will be permanently excluded from participating in federal healthcare programs.

NEWARK, N.J. – A Hudson County, New Jersey, man today admitted stealing dozens of cell phones from mail that passed through a postal distribution center where he was employed, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced. Kyle Terry, 36, of Jersey City, New Jersey, pleaded guilty by videoconference before U.S. District Judge John Michael Vazquez to an information charging him with one count of theft of mail by a postal employee. NEWARK, N.J. – An Essex County, New Jersey, woman today admitted stealing checkbooks and credit cards from the mail while employed as a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) clerk and filing fraudulent applications for loans intended for small businesses experiencing disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced.
